Khedive Ismail's lavish spending on infrastructure and his personal extravagance — including the Suez Canal's opening ceremonies — bankrupted the state in 1876, leading Britain and France to impose the Caisse de la Dette Publique, which directly collected tax revenues to service the debt and laid the groundwork for the 1882 British occupation.
